Mechanical Seal Rings Mechanical seal rings are used to prevent the flow of liquids or gases between two machine elements which are moving relative to one another. Oil-free, self-lubricating Metcar is widely used for demanding mechanical seal applications because of its unique combination of characteristics: • Metcar is self-lubricating, which eliminates need for external lubrication. • Metcar is self-polishing, which insures a good sealing mate. • Metcar is corrosion-resistant so it can function in the presence of practically any commercial liquid or vapor. • Metcar has controlled permeability. It can be supplied "drip tight’, which permits the sealed medium to be metered to the sealing surface to reduce friction; or it can be specified to completely contain even gases under high pressure. • Metcar is mechanically strong and wear-resistant to provide long service life under severe operating conditions. • Metcar has exceptional thermal conductivity, which enables it to remove frictional heat from the running surface and permits high operating speeds. • Metcar is readily machinable to tolerances of .0005" or less. Flatness specifications to 3 helium light bands are routinely supplied. • Metcar is dimensionally stable and shows less tendency to expand, warp or creep than most other materials. • Metcar can be molded-to-size to avoid costly machining time and material waste.
